You do not need rhythm, coordination or a fitness level to walk into a DJ Zumba class in Darwin. You need shoes you can move in and 45 minutes.

What actually happens

Your first class, start to finish.

Nothing on this list requires you to be good at anything.

  1. You arrive

    Somebody says hello and points at the water.

  2. The music starts

    A warm-up you can follow by copying the person at the front.

  3. You get it wrong

    So does everyone. The song changes every three minutes anyway.

  4. You stop noticing

    Somewhere in the middle, you are just dancing.

  5. You leave

    Warm, slightly out of breath, and booked in for next week.

The three things people worry about

"I have no rhythm"

The beat is loud and obvious on purpose. Follow your feet, not the count.

"Everyone will look at me"

They are facing the front, working out what their own feet are doing.

"I am not fit enough"

Take the low-impact option any time you like. Nobody is counting.

Do I need any dance experience?

None at all. Moves are demonstrated and called out as they happen, and they repeat often enough that you will have them before the song ends. Most people in the room started with no experience either.

Can I come on my own?

Most people do the first time. You will be dancing in a group within minutes, and nobody is looking at anyone else — they are all watching the instructor.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable clothes you can move in and supportive shoes. Bring water and a small towel — it is Darwin.

What if I cannot follow every step?

Keep moving in whatever way feels comfortable. Nobody is checking, there is no pressure to get every movement right, and the steps come back around often enough that you will catch the next one.

How much does it cost?

Passes work out from about A$8.60 a class, and the bigger passes include bonus classes. You can also pay for a single class if you would rather try one before committing.

What if I have to cancel?

Cancel your booking and the class goes straight back onto your pass, so nothing is lost as long as you let us know in time.
